“One of the oldest regions in the world it [North East England] has been slowly reinventing itself to become one of the current ‘hottest’ places to visit. Not only has North East England won a spot on Lonely Planet’s ‘must visit’ Blue List for 2008, but Newcastle has for the fourth consecutive year been nominated as the country’s favourite English city-break destination in The Guardian and Observer newspapers’ travel awards.”

The historian G M Trevelyan, one of the celebrated families who owned Wallington Hall, summed up the feeling of space and freedom when he described the county as the ‘land of far horizons’. “Durham is the perfect place to put on the brakes and slow down, whether in the cloisters of Durham Cathedral or looking over the purple heather of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Whether you stay for a weekend or a month, Durham is an oasis of peace in our turbulent world.”

“Roseberry Topping – It’s a short climb, yet its ease of access belies the stupendous 360-degree panorama from its summit. Nothing can dilute the jaw-dropping impact of these knockout views. I gaze out to the wild, wonderful and underwalked Cleveland Hills, to the towering obelisk of Captain Cook’s Monument to the south, and to the North Sea. Each view better than the last.”
Jonathan Manning, editor of Country Walking magazine
“In 1987 the remnants of Hadrian’s Wall were declared a World Heritage Site…It’s a marvellous place to take the kids for a hike in the fresh air where they can see and touch an important part of Britain’s history.”
Alan Hart, Wanderwall article, Sunday Mirror

Derek Houghton, A ride around Kielder Water article, Cycling World
