The Sage Gateshead’s shell-like curves form an iconic silhouette on NewcastleGateshead’s Quayside, and were designed by Sir Norman Foster and Partners to provide outstanding acoustics. It is home to the acclaimed Northern Sinfonia as well as hosting musical events from jazz to folk.

Gigs and rock concerts

Hot new sounds erupt from grand old buildings: The Journal Tyne Theatre, which hosts rock and opera as well as drama, is a restored Victorian venue, as is the Carling Academy, which attracts such high-profile bands and artists as Goldfrapp, Groove Armada and Supergrass.

Sunderland’s impressive football ground the Stadium of Light is set to rock to the strains of Take That and Oasis in June 2009, and the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle regularly hosts international names such as The Killers and Keane.

Up-and-coming musicians can be found at pubs such as The Cluny and Head of Steam in Newcastle, and you can hear everything from live reggae to jazz at The Forum in Darlington.
